Catalina Picture Tile was started in Venice Ca. in 1978 under the early name of Palisades Picture Tile by tilemaker Chris Reutinger. Because he was an avid collector of Catalina Tiles from the facility located at Pebbly Beach in the 1920-30's, and these tiles were so scarce, He decided to make high quality reproductions for other collectors.
Chris went to Avalon and took rubbings of all the bird and fish sets to make sure the lines of his tiles would be as accurate as possible to the Originals. Besides these reproductions, he has created a whole line of his original ideas called "scenes we wish the old company had made". All are done in the original Catalina Style. The Glazes used are as close in color to the original as possible. Firing is to Cone 06 and tile sizes used are 6x6", 8x8" and 12x12"
The company was started, as stated before, under the name Palisades Picture Tile in Venice Ca. in 1978. It moved to Pacific Palisades in 1984 and produced there until 1988 when it moved again to Malibu. The current studio is located on Pt. Dume, Malibu Ca. which is in view of Santa Catalina Island. On January 1, 2000 the name was changed to Catalina Picture Tile to identify the "early work" and to better reflect the whole nature of the companies style of tlie making.
